Energy Audit & Thermal Imaging

Infrared thermography reveals where a building is losing energy — missing insulation, moisture, air leaks and thermal bridging — so improvements target the sources that actually matter.

What thermal imaging examines

The building thermography process identifies the locations and sources of energy loss.

Building insulation is the most significant factor in retaining or losing heat, and directly drives the energy needed to heat or cool a building while keeping a comfortable internal temperature. Heating costs in winter and cooling costs in summer can be drastically reduced once the necessary insulation improvements are identified and made — this is especially true in older buildings, where deficiencies are most common.

We offer thermal imaging services that let us accurately identify sources of energy loss that would otherwise be invisible, using the temperature data the infrared camera collects across a building's surfaces. Rebate programs to encourage thermal improvements have been offered at various times by both Ontario and the federal government, so it is worth checking current availability before planning a retrofit.

Thermal imaging is also offered as an optional element within a property condition assessment, where it adds a diagnostic layer to the visual inspection.

Common questions

Energy Audit & Thermal Imaging Questions

What does thermal imaging detect in a building?

Locations and sources of energy loss: missing or defective insulation, moisture penetration, air leaks and thermal bridging. The camera reveals temperature differences invisible to the eye, which point directly to where a building envelope is underperforming.

Why does insulation matter so much to the audit?

It is the most significant factor in retaining or losing heat, which drives the energy needed to heat or cool a building while keeping it comfortable. Improving insulation can substantially reduce both winter heating costs and summer cooling costs — especially in older buildings.

Is thermal imaging useful beyond energy loss?

Yes. The same camera data can reveal moisture intrusion and other building envelope issues that are not primarily about energy efficiency, making it a useful diagnostic tool alongside a property condition assessment.

Are there incentives for making the improvements a scan identifies?

Rebate programs for thermal improvements have been offered at various times by both Ontario and the federal government. Availability changes, so it is worth checking current programs before committing to a retrofit.

How is a thermal scan typically delivered?

As part of a broader energy audit or property condition assessment — the infrared imaging identifies where the problems are, and the accompanying report explains what they mean and what to do about them.
